Global Shakespeares,Presidency University, Kolkata

Recent scholarship has laid much emphasis on how William Shakespeare's plays engaged directly with what is now being described as the "Global Renaissance". From Titus Andronicus to The Tempest, his plays seem deeply interested in staging and exploring racialized others and moments of contact. At the same time, Shakespeare as part of the British literary canon, played a vital role in the colonial machinery; and later became an indispensable part of postcolonial resistance.

The Global Shakespeares conference at Presidency University, marking the Bard's 450th year of birth, invites papers and panels that examine any aspect of Shakespeare's plays and poems within this larger context of the global. Papers and panels might look at sixteenth-and-seventeenth century contexts, as well as any subsequent adaptations, appropriations, or productions. Possible topics might include:

  • Local and global Shakespeares
  • Multimedial Shakespeare
  • Shakespeare and nationalism
  • Colonial Shakespeare
  • Shakespeare and the English language
  • Vernacularizing Shakespeare: translations, adaptations, performances
  • Teaching Shakespeare in non-anglophone cultures
  • Shakespeare and theory
  • Shakespeare and race
  • Shakespeare and early modern travel writing
