Suranjana Banerji

Assistant Professor

Graduated from Loreto College, Kolkata with Honours in Geography and was awarded the M.Sc. Degree in Geography, by the University of Calcutta. Passed the National Eligibility Test (NET) for Lectureship in Geography conducted by the University Grants Commission, National Educational Testing Bureau, New Delhi, held on 20th June 2004. Received the MA Degree in Sustainable Development from Staffordshire University, UK. Was awarded the Ph.D Degree in Geography by the University of Calcutta in 2013.

Was a University Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Geography, University of Calcutta (2006-2007).

I have been working on the conservation and management of the East Kolkata Wetlands since 2006. My doctoral work was a policy-oriented research and primarily concentrated on the prospects of preservation of the East Kolkata Wetlands located in the eastern fringes of Kolkata, with particular reference to conservation and management of sewage-fed fisheries, and the role played by the Government, the Stakeholders and the Community for their preservation. 

Currently I am working on a book focusing on the need for good governance for the sustainable development of resources with particular reference to the East Kolkata Wetlands.

Administrative Experience:

During my tenure in Taki Government College, I worked as a member of various Committees of the college which were entrusted with different administrative functions – Admission Committee, Election Committee, Examination Committee etc.

I joined the West Bengal Education Service in April 2007 and taught at Taki Government College as an Assistant Professor in Geography from 4th April 2007 to 11th March 2013.

Was a Substitute Whole-time Lecturer in Geography in Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College (2004-05)

Was a Part-time Lecturer in Geography in Sivnath Sastri College (2004-2005)
